In an embarrassing defeat on Friday, Daniil Medvedev suffered a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 loss to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal of Wimbledon 2023. At the beginning of the match, there was hope for a competitive showdown as both players seemed evenly matched. Medvedev, who was also playing in his first Wimbledon semi-final, managed to keep up with the top seed, Alcaraz.
However, once the Spaniard secured a crucial break to take a 5-3 lead in the opening set, it became evident that he had gained control of the match. From that point on, Alcaraz displayed a masterful performance, effortlessly utilizing his diverse set of skills to ruthlessly dismantle the 27-year-old Medvedev. The match ended in a convincing victory for world no.1, leaving Medvedev with a disappointing outcome in the Wimbledon semi-final.
In their previous encounter at Wimbledon in 2021, Medvedev had defeated Carlos Alcaraz, who was ranked World No. 75 at that time, in straight sets. However, in their recent semi-final meeting, Alcaraz proved to be a completely different challenge. Over the past two years, Alcaraz has significantly improved his game, winning 11 tour-level titles, and it was evident in his performance against Medvedev.
Fans react to Daniil Medvedev’s defeat
Fans were not happy with the outcome of the match. They were expecting more from Medvedev who did not provide much of a challenge to Alcaraz. Some even went on to say that the match was rigged. Here are some of the reactions-
Despite facing adversity, Alcaraz remained determined, recovering from losing his serve twice in the third set. His return game was particularly strong, enabling him to raise his level further and ultimately secure victory with a stunning forehand winner. This remarkable performance showcased Alcaraz’s growth as a player and proved to be too much for Medvedev, who couldn’t find a way to overcome the Spaniard’s mastery on the court. Alcaraz will now face Novak Djokovic in the finals on Sunday.
