“Another poor decision” Fans slam Wimbledon as they announce the decision of Iga Swiatek opening at centre court ahead of Simona Halep

Simona Halep, Iga Swiatek

Wimbledon has made a lot of decisions to rock the tennis world in 2022. First was the ban on Russian and Belarusian players and now the decision of playing Iga Swiatek‘s match as the opening match on the centre court. Wimbledon has a tradition that the previous year’s Champion opens the play at centre court both for the men’s and women’s sides. Ashleigh Barty, the 2021 Wimbledon champion retired after her Australian Open 2022 victory, so there was a decision to be made.

Simona Halep, the 2019 Wimbledon Champion did not play in the 2021 edition and the Wimbledon 2020 was not held due to the pandemic, leading her to lose her chance to open the play on centre court. The lack of defending champion this year in the women’s draw and Simona losing her chance to open in 2021, was the perfect opportunity for Wimbledon to give her the opportunity to open the play.

Fans outrage as Iga Swiatek gets the opportunity despite not being a Wimbledon Champion.

Wimbledon made another surprising decision of choosing Iga Swiatek to open the play over Simona Halep. There was a lot of outrage because Halep being a Wimbledon champion should have gotten the chance, and even more so because she missed the opportunity in 2021. But, the fact that Halep withdrew from Bad Homburg Open just a few days earlier due to a neck injury could have been the main reason for this decision.

Iga Swiatek, being the world number 1 gets the privilege to open the play and she is the frontrunner to win the Wimbledon 2022 as she sets foot on the court on Monday with a 35-match win streak. Though Swiatek is worthy of opening the play at centre court, it’s not right for Wimbledon to disregard a former Wimbledon Champion. Swiatek faces Jana Fett as the Croatian will try to put some resistance against the world number 1. Halep would hope to be fit as she opens her campaign against a very strong Karolina Muchova on Monday.
