The WTA recently celebrated their viewership for the 2023 Tour, where they claimed that over 1 billion fans tuned in to watch the WTA Tour this season with a post on social media.
Taking to their official X handle, it also celebrated 50 years of WTA. However, the post was not well received by fans across the globe, as they started demanding the organization improve their telecast schedules before boasting about their viewership.
The organization has been under constant scrutiny by the fans for several things in the recent past. It is often claimed that a disorganized WTA is ‘failing’ women’s tennis and the chaos that transpired at the WTA Finals in Cancun was symptomatic of that.
The stadium in Cancun where the 2023 WTA Finals were played was not ready until the very day the tournament was set to begin. Moreover, the participants constantly complained about the poor court quality and several other things. This opened up the discussion of the various things that WTA was managing poorly.
The WTA suffered significant losses due to COVID-19. The various tournaments that they organize are their biggest assets, and they suffered huge losses in 2019, 2020, and 2021. The loss in 2019 was only $1 million, but it rose to $16.5 million and $15.1 million in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
Due to such financial problems, the WTA has failed to promote its events properly and telecast them properly. Their streaming platform, WTA TV, consistently has technical issues and still doesn’t have an app, six years after its inception. It cannot even be compared to ATP in this sphere.
Fans react to WTA boasting about their viewership
The WTA’s celebratory post did not go down well with the fans. They started complaining about how difficult it is to access their matches and suggested that they focus on that before posting about their viewership.
Many fans also raised the long-asked question of an increase in pay for women tennis players. Recently, even Daria Kasatkina stated that WTA can increase their prize money but still chooses not to do so.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
Many pointed out that the United Cup is currently going on and WTA has not posted a single highlight of anything whatsoever; they claimed that even Tennis TV is doing a better job than WTA in sharing quality content.
