Feliciano Lopez, the tournament director of the Madrid Open is back at being bashed on social media. It seems like the cake size difference between Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka made a bigger dent to his reputation than he would have hoped for. And the episode continues as Andy Murray made a tweet on his own birthday that re-ignited the different treatment meted out to men and women on tour.

Andy Murray jokingly had demanded a bigger cake than that of Carlos Alcaraz’s. Feliciano Lopez had replied to the tweet saying, he would look into the matter and try and arrange something for the 36 year old Brit. Lopez quickly deleted the tweet but Twitter had already made a note of what the retired Spanish player wrote and didn’t let him off easily.

Earlier on May 6th when the debate about the preferential treatment was in full heat, Lopez had tried to explain why the cake sized were different. He had also posted a picture of

Holger Rune’s cake which was cut on tournament, to justify his stance. And to prove it was not gender related differential treatment

Several female tennis players like Victoria Azarenka and also Aryna Sabalenka were vocal about the whole incident and said this was reflective of how men are treated much better than women.

Though Andy Murray’s tweet was meat to be a sarcastic joke some tennis fans didn’t find the tweet funny. As they believed, underneath it all it was a serious matter of inequity. Inequity of treatment and inequity of pay for different genders.

But what fumed the tennis fans more was how Felciano responded to it. They felt that the Madrid Open tournament director has still not understood the depth of the issue as he continues to poke fun at the matter. They felt that Lopez could arrange anything as long as it was asked by a male tennis player.

Some fans also linked this incident to the women’s doubles presentation speech incident that happened in Madrid.

The winners and runner-ups were not allowed the chance to speak at the presentation ceremony which became an even bigger issue than the cake-gate incident.
