Spanish legend Feliciano Lopez names compatriot David Ferrer as his greatest Davis Cup teammate snubbing the legend Rafael Nadal. When the question was asked who is his greatest teammate, Lopez had to think a bit but he chose Ferrer’s name over Nadal even though the Lopez-Nadal pair had had magical moments in their careers together including the doubles gold in the Rio Olympics, in 2016. But maybe because the question was specific to the Davis Cup, Lopez should have picked Ferrer.

As Lopez said, “Phew! (Thinks) Obviously, Rafa (Nadal) has won everything he has played, he has not lost a single match on clay. But David (Ferrer), due to different situations, always had to go and play in qualifying matches away. In Argentina I remember that Rafa injured his knee, in Austin he was also injured, in the final in Prague he was injured.”

Lopez continued on how Ferrer came out and beat top players in difficult situations, that too when he was playing as a sub for the great Rafael Nadal, “David(Ferrer) had to come out to play: he beat Stepanek in three sets and Berdych in three sets. He almost won the tie alone, apart from all the victories he has at home on clay, I would tell you that at most he has lost one match.” (Source: Punto De Break, translated via Google)

Though Lopz’s name usually comes after Nadal, Ferrer, and even Carlos Alcaraz now, This Spanish star has the unique record of having the most number of match wins of a Spaniard on grass courts with 87. His long career was always with ups and downs, but he could never enter the Top-10 rankings ever. His highest ranking stands at 12, this was achieved in 2015 when he reached his best result in the Australian Open (fourth round).

2015 is considered to be his best year on tour when he was able to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open as well. His best result in the French Open is also a fourth-round appearance, whereas, in Wimbledon, he has reached the quarter-finals multiple times (2005, 2008, and 2011).

Lopez ended the career with a win-loss record of 506-490. He also was a good doubles player with a Grand Slam title won in 2016. It was in the French Open. He also reached the doubles finals of the US Open in 2017. But there is no question that his greatest achievement in tennis will be the Rio Olympics Gold with Rafael Nadal in Men’s tennis doubles.
