“My record is impossible for anyone to beat,” Feliciano Lopez takes a cheeky dig on Big-3 over unbreakable records

Former World No. 12, Feliciano Lopez recently entered retirement after completing an astonishing 26 years on tour. Lopez played his last match in October 2022 in the Gijon Open. Unfortunately, Lopez lost in the Round of 32 match of the ATP 250 tournament. Lopez played his 79th Grand Slam at the 2022 Wimbledon.

The 41-year-old won his first-ever Grand Slam title, competing for the doubles title, in the 2016 Australian Open. He also reached the quarter-finals of the US Open in 2015. In addition, he has made a record 21 consecutive French Open appearances. Recently, the Spaniard cheekily suggested that his record of 79 Grand Slam appearances will remain unbeatable.

The Madrid Masters director commented on the feat, claiming that it was ‘impossible’ to beat. He stated that it was obvious that the record is difficult to achieve. Absurdly, he directed a cheeky remark toward the Big Three also, saying, “It is obvious that my record is difficult or almost impossible for anyone to beat. It’s 20 years without failure. But we cannot put it on the same level as the 22 titles.”

Furthermore, Lopez also lauded Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic for their vast accomplishments and unbeatable feats. He called the Big Three’s dominance a mark of an era. “The numbers that Nadal, Federer and Djokovic have reached…will mark an era. I don’t see anyone in the future who can achieve the records of these three players. It’s amazing and that’s why I think it’s out of reach for any player to come in the future,” said Lopez.

Feliciano Lopez admits that Rafael Nadal was ‘destined’ to break all records

Other players who fall behind Lopez in the list of most Grand Slam appearances include another Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco (67) and Italian Andreas Seppi (66). Out of the Big three, Federer (65) and Djokovic (51) make an appearance too. Wayne Ferreira, Stefan Edberg, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer and Stan Wawrinka are some of the others on the Top 10 list.

Feliciano Lopez, a fellow compatriot, thinks Rafael Nadal is “destined” to shatter every tennis record ever set. Lopez described the Spanish great as “one in a million.”The 41-year-old asserted that his generation was the “greatest generation” his nation has ever produced under the leadership of the 22-time Grand Slam champion.

The Mallorcan and other players before and after him, he said, have contributed to Spain’s dominance in the tennis world. He also said Carlos Maya was among those players. Lopez also added, “Spanish tennis players are beginning to believe that they can play well on surfaces other than clay. Nadal has put the culmination of this change of mentality.
