Felix Auger Aliassime crashes out of the Madrid Open in the round of 64 as he falls short against Dusan Lajovic. Hilariously, Patrick Mouratoglou, Felix’s coach, had declared him a threat on the court a few days back. Patrick had said even the King of Clay need to look out for Felix Auger Aliassime in the French Open. Targeting Rafael Nadal’s not-so-great form and injuries, Mouratoglou had said, “Imagine Rafa has to play Felix Auger-Aliassime, it’s a very tough match like last year in Roland-Garros and then, the next match, he might have to play Jannik Sinner, to play Alcaraz“.

In a turn of events, Felix Auger Aliassime, who Patrick Mouratoglou declared a threat to Rafael Nadal, crashed out of the Madrid Open in the first week itself. Agreed Dusan Lajovic, Felix’s fall is in his form of life, but this was an unexpected upset. Dusan Lajovic recently won the Banja Luka Open, defeating Novak Djokovic in the Quarterfinals. Despite his form, Dusan was considered an underdog against Felix. But the match was a close one between the Serb Lajovic and the Canadian. And Patrick Mouratoglou’s prophecy has failed as of now.

Patrick Mouratoglou is one of the busiest coaches of this era. He has been a coach to Serena Williams, Grigor Dimitrov, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Coco Gauff, Simona Halep, and Holger Rune. Holger Rune and Stefanos Tsitsipas have been his biggest success story in 2022-23. But he has all burners burning in women’s tennis with key players like Coco Gauff and Simona Halep, when the bans lift on her.

Felix Auger Aliassime, who was considered a young player to look out for, has not had a great 2023. Tennis experts are still debating over if he was a real talent or more of a hyped case. Felix has had a 40% loss percentage in 2023. 2022 was a great year professionally for the 22-year-old. He won 4 titles and broke into the highest ranking of World no. 6.

But 2023 has not been too kind to him as he lost in the first round of the Adelaide Open to Alexei Popyrin. In the Sunshine doubles he had a decent run, but he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells. In Miami Open he lost in the third round to Francisco Cerundolo, who has also been in a great form. But the tennis fraternity had hoped for better results from Felix in 2023, leading up to the good year he had in 2022.

Though he crashed out of Miami in the first week, fans hope to see him last longer in the Italian Open. He is a strong contender for French Open, but his current form will position him as an underdog more than a threat.
