The struggles of Felix Auger-Aliassime continue on the Tour. His inconsistent form is on display yet again as he crashes out in the second round of the ongoing Marseille Open.
The World No. 28 was up against the World No. 50, Zhizhen Zhang, and lost the match in straight sets. The 27-year-old Chinese advances into the quarterfinals with a clinical 6-4, 6-4 win over the Canadian. It was a short affair, as the match lasted for just 1 hour and 28 minutes.
Zhang was the better player in every parameter. He converted three breakpoints and also saved three breakpoints during the match, winning the match with a healthy lead of 14 points. He will now take on Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the last eight, fighting for a place in the semis.
Zhang had earlier defeated lucky loser Giulio Zeppieri in over three sets. As for Aliassime, he had beaten wildcard entrant and local lad Quentin Halys in straight sets. Looking good in his last few matches, the Canadian was a favorite for many in this tie. But Zhang had other plans, as he knocked out the Canadian easily.
Felix Auger-Aliassime berated for another early exit
The poor form of Aliassime was on display once again. He is now 5-4 for the season. After losing his season debut in Auckland, he made a good comeback at the 2024 Australian Open. He defeated former runner-up Dominic Thiem in over five sets.
He then overpowered Hugo Grenier in four sets, looking comfortable. But he was stopped in his tracks by eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev. The Russian won in straight sets to move into the fourth round. Felix returned to the tour and made the semis in Montpellier before losing to eventual champ Alexander Bublik.
The expectations were on the rise around World No. 6. But today’s defeat was yet again disappointing for him and many fans as well. Following his exit, he was subjected to massive criticism, with abuses hurled towards him on X (formerly Twitter).
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
The Canadian will look to bounce back at next week’s Rotterdam Open. With defending champ Medvedev out and many other big names missing, he would be looking forward to making the most of it. He is expected to play in Acapulco later this month, another ATP-500 event after Rotterdam.
