Canadian tennis player Felix Auger-Aliassime has received the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award at the 2023 ATP Awards for his brilliant philanthropic work around the globe. The award is named after American tennis player Arthur Ashe, who was the first Black player to make it to the USA’s Davis Cup team. He, too, was known for his philanthropic work.
When I was told I would receive the 2023 Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award, I was pleasantly surprised. It was great news. But you don't ever help others to win awards. I know Arthur didn’t.Felix after winning the award (H/T: ATP Tour)
Auger-Aliassime said he was glad to be recognized, not just as a player but as a human. His dad Sam grew up in a third-world country, Tongo, and did not have much access to education or sports.
Upon moving to Canada, he knew to importance of those two things and thus made sure that his family had all those facilities. Thus, Felix knew about the lack of resources that some people suffer from since he was a child, thanks to the stories that his father told him.
Three years ago, Felix Auger-Aliassime teamed up with BNP Paribas and created #FAAPointsForChange. With every point that he scored, $20 was donated to EduChange, which was set up by the NGO CARE and helps kids from Tongo’s Kara region.
Felix Auger-Aliassime’s season at a glance
Felix Auger-Aliassime won the Basel Swiss Indoors this season and apart from that, his season was pretty average. The Canadian suffered from a lack of form in 2023 and although he got a lot better in the latter half of 2023, it does not necessarily mean that he does not have to improve in the upcoming season.
Thus, winning the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award is definitely a highlight for Felix this year and it is much more special because he won it by making the lives of others better. The Canadian will definitely keep working in the same way in the upcoming years.
He has been named in the entry list of the 2024 Australian Open and will participate in the tournament. Tennis fans expect to see a better performance from him there. It will be interesting to see whether the World No. 29 is able to make a comeback this year.
