“Fell in love with the sport” NFL player Kirk Cousins chooses tennis over basketball to keep himself fit and ready to play at big tournaments

Kirk Cousins

Kirk Cousins is an American football quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL). Before playing for the Minnesota Vikings, he used to play for the Washington Redskins. It’s been 10 years since Cousins made his NFL debut. He signed a one-year extension contract with the Vikings earlier this year.

Cousins doesn’t take days off but rather uses his time efficiently to be always fit in shape and be ready for play at the big tournaments. Last season, Cousins had 4,221 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He is hoping for a better season further this fall. With the training camps about to start after a week, to keep himself in the best shape he opts to give a shot with the tennis racquet rather than trying for basketball.

Cousins showed off his tennis skills with forehand and one-handed backhand shots during a light practice match on the beautiful grass courts at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. In an interview, he even expressed his love for the sport and how he enjoys playing the game. He said, “I love the sport. I was looking for a way to train in the off-season and not just to do boring training, but do something fun“.

He further expressed his decision to choose tennis over basketball. He said that “Thought about pickup basketball, but was concerned about the risk of injury, so ended up doing tennis and just fell in love with it. Didn’t realize just how much it would carry over to playing quarterback. Can’t get enough of it“.

He got the chance to meet John Isner and Andy Murray at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and he considers Murray as an inspirational source of determination.
