Russian tennis ace Daria Kasatkina fell prey to WTA’s reckless scheduling as she lost her first-round match at the Qatar Open on Monday. As Kasatkina had to play her match only 24 hours after playing a grueling final against Elena Rybakina in Abu Dhabi, she felt fatigued and lost the match in straight sets.
This unfair treatment of players on the tour led to the fans getting angry at the authorities. They claimed that the WTA cares little about the players. A fan even commented that the WTA does not even deserve to run the sport.
@wta does not deserve to run this sport. They don't care for their players or the improvement of the sport. They have other rubbish priorities. The user wrote on X.
Other users also joined this user in criticizing the WTA for their inappropriate scheduling. A few also asked as to why Kasatkina was not given a bye in the first round.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
It is worth mentioning that not only Kasatkina, but a few more players had to go through the same treatment. Karolina Pliskova and Beatriz Haddad Maia also had to play two matches on two consecutive days.
Daria Kasatkina warned about inappropriate scheduling
Daria Kasatkina had expressed her displeasure at this inappropriate scheduling from the WTA. After she got to know about her schedule at the Qatar Open, Kasatkina lashed out at the authorities. The 26-year-old explained how it would be tough for her to play two matches back-to-back.
Kasatkina did not mince her words when she claimed that the authorities were trying to make people die or injured with such reckless and inappropriate scheduling.
It's terrible scheduling, honestly. I don't know how you can schedule the finals of the tournament on Sunday, wanting to finish the next tournament on Saturday, so you start it on Sunday, and like this, the player, if like me, you don't have a bye in Doha, I have to play on Monday.Daria Kasatkina said. I play the final [on Sunday] at 5pm. We don't have yet this technology that I can be in Doha in five seconds. I have a question, I don't know to who, to WTA or the tournaments, like, are you guys trying to make players die, or to get injured often? The Russian ace added.
It is worth mentioning that the Qatar Open, being a WTA 1000 event offers big prize money and ranking points, and hence players do not want to miss it. The intensity of the matches is also high and it becomes difficult for the players to stay injury-free.
