Juan Martin del Potro, a former US Open champion and world No. 3, has expressed his intentions to make a comeback to competitive tennis, targeting the Grand Slam event that he won in 2009, scheduled for August this year. The Argentinian player last competed on tour in February 2022, in front of his hometown fans in Buenos Aires.
At that time, he had stated that he was finding it too challenging to continue training and was taking a break from the sport to pursue a pain-free lifestyle. However, he had also left the possibility of a return open. Del Potro recently spoke to South American sports journalist Danny Miche, revealing his plan to return to training and evaluate how his body responds. The tennis player intends to keep his options open until his preferred tournament, the US Open.
Speaking about his return to the court, Del Potro said, “I love tennis, it will never be a problem to pick up a racquet and see how I feel. The physical problem and my knee are things I work on every day. I’m going to leave that window open, at least until the US Open as I said. This is the most special tournament for me. I still have time, I will start training, see how my leg and knee react and if I can do it or not.”
Over the coming months, Juan Martin will test his knee to gauge its response, hoping to make a final push to revive his injury-plagued career. Despite making several attempts to stage a comeback in recent years, he has been unsuccessful. Last year, he suffered a devastating loss in front of his family, friends, and supporters, exiting in the opening round of the Argentina Open, falling to compatriot Federico Delbonis.
