Novak Djokovic has gone through immense scrutiny after he was denied entry in the United States due to his unvaccinated status. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention relaxed some of its vaccine guidelines this month but not for non-US citizens. Fans were waiting till the last minute to hear from the tournament authorities about the champion’s participation but with the main draw out, there will be no signs of Djokovic at this year’s US open.
The former World No. 1 finally withdrew his name from the US Open on Thursday. He said on social media, “Sadly, I will not be able to travel to NY this time for US Open. Thank you #nolefam for your messages of love and support. Good luck to my fellow players! I’ll keep in good shape and positive spirit and wait for an opportunity to compete again. See you soon tennis world!” Several high profile players expressed their support for Djokovic recently but the laws remain unchanged for the Serbian tennis star.

The silence of our colleagues, countrymen, media, family & friends is what hurts the most : Gina Carano on Novak Djokovic’s situation
Novak Djokovic was near to completing his Calendar slam when Daniil Medvedev defeated him agonizingly in straight sets at the 2021 US Open. Djokovic already had a tough 2022 season with his deportation from Australia because of the vaccine mandates and quarter-final exit at the French Open where he lost to long time rival Rafael Nadal. Djokovic found some stability at the Wimbledon championships where he won the final against Nick Kyrgios to claim his 21st grand slam title.
Former MMA star and actress Gina Carano expressed her disappointment with the whole fiasco. She tweeted, “If all the tennis players boycotted the @usopen until @DjokerNole was permitted to play it would cause change. The silence of our colleagues, countrymen, media, family & friends is what hurts the most. THIS ALL FALLS APART WHEN WE STAND TOGETHER. When will you have had enough?”
The 2022 US Open will start from August 29 and will run through September 11.
