Former Wimbledon Doubles champion Frederik Lochte Nielsen has alleged that 23-time Grand Slam Champion Novak Djokovic tries to portray a false image of himself to the public.

The 39-year-old 2012 Wimbledon doubles champion, Nielsen, believes that his young Danish compatriot Holger Rune has a much more genuine approach to dealing with the press than Novak Djokovic.

Nielsen, who spoke exclusively to the Danish periodical SpilXperten, feels that Novak Djokovic does not need to keep up with the sham that he allegedly presents.

The Dane, who was a doubles specialist, expressed his disappointment that Novak Djokovic does not portray his genuine self in front of the media. Nielsen said that although he likes Djokovic in many different ways, he finds it disappointing that the Serb tries to portray himself as someone he is not.

Nielsen strongly feels that Djokovic should refrain from doing so. Nielsen defended Djokovic’s distrust of the media, citing his history of being the subject of negative articles and coverage.

Nielsen said that Holger Rune is “honest” and “truly stands by himself.” He also said that Rune gives “good and funny answers” and is “good on TV.” Nielsen compared Rune to Nick Kyrgios, saying that Rune has “a bit of that in him” because he is not afraid to show a part of himself. Nielsen concluded by saying that Rune has “a fresh attitude, ” which helps him build value off the court.

“We know how Nick Kyrgios presents himself in various media, and Holger has a bit of the same in him. He is not afraid to give something of himself,” Nielsen said. “Holger has a fresh attitude, and that also helps him to build value off the pitch, if you have to talk about it.”

Frederik Neilsen believes the media unfairly targets players like Nick Kyrgios and Holger Rune. He said that Rune has improved significantly in terms of his on-court behavior but that he is still just a passionate kid who loves to play tennis. Nielsen also said that he thinks it is a real shame that Novak Djokovic does not embrace himself and stand by the person he is. Nielsen concluded by saying that he believes that a narrative is being built around Rune that is not entirely correct and that lazy journalism is to blame for this.

Defending Wimbledon Champion Novak Djokovic and 20-year-old Dane Holger Rune will be competing at the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic at Hurlingham this week, which will also see Novak play his first match since he won a record 23-Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros.
