The Australian retired from the sport when she was ranked No. 1, almost two months following her Australian Open win. Her lifting the trophy in Melbourne made her the first player from her country to do so after 44 years. Chris O’Neil had lifted the Australian Open in 1977.

The Australian Open winner opened up about her decision to retire in an interview on Channel7’s show Sunrise. “It (the travel) was probably something I struggled with throughout my whole career. The travel was hard, without a doubt, but it has also been such a huge part of my life and has helped shape me to who I am today,” she said at that time.

She had taken a break from professional tennis after the 2014 US Open. And interestingly, she played cricket in Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) next year for the Brisbane Heat.

Notably, Barty was the second Australian player to be ranked at the top position. The three-time Grand Slam champion has a win-loss record of 305-102 in her singles career. She won her first Grand Slam in 2019 at the French Open, lifted the Wimbledon in 2021, and the Australian Open in 2022. It will be interesting to see whether Barty follows in the footsteps of other female players to make a comeback to tennis post becoming a mum.
