“It would be super good for tennis”- Former World No. 2 optimistic about Novak Djokovic’s chances of playing at Australian Open 2023
Novak Djokovic and Alex Corretja
Former World No.2 Alex Corretja was all in praise and hope for the Serbian former World No.1 Novak Djokovic as he talked about how it makes sense from Djokovic’s perspective to skip the tournaments and yet able to win almost everything he plays without showing any losses of rhythm. As reported by Eurosport UK, he “sacrificed” some of the major tournaments for more important events.
He started by saying, “And I’m sure he’s been suffering so much because he loves tennis as much as all the others, but because of the circumstances, he decided that he didn’t want to go through some situations and sacrificed some of the bigger events of the tennis world. And especially since he’s been bidding to become the greatest of the whole history at the end of their careers when they retire.
Continuing his train of thought, he further added, “He’s been for me an example of superiority because every time he plays he’s almost winning. And also when you don’t play that much, then it’s difficult to get the rhythm, but he’s been just winning almost every time he plays the tournament.”
He continued the analysis of the blistering form Djokovic has showcased in all the tournaments where he was allowed to play, “So it’s been quite an amazing season from Novak, and I only hope that for next season he could play all the tournaments and all the events because that would be extremely good for him.
He further added how important it is for the sport to have him on the courts to fight, “But it would be super good for tennis, because if you have one of the best players in the history of tennis and he’s not playing the most important tournaments, it (definitely) changed the dynamics and the history of our game. So hopefully he’s going to be able to play because that would be the best for everyone“.
Novak Djokovic is looking to win a record 6th ATP Final in Turin
Serbian World No.8 Novak Djokovic has won almost everything where he got a chance this year. After missing most of the tournaments, including 2 majors, he is still inside the top 10 despite getting no points on winning Wimbledon. This in short proves how effective he has been in the tournaments he got a chance to play this year.
His resume of the year looks like this: Won 4 ATP titles with a win-loss record of 37-7, unbeatable on the grass with 7 wins, 16-3 on hard, and 14-4 on clay. Other than Wimbledon, he won the ATP-1000 Rome masters, ATP-500 Astana Open, and ATP-250 Tel Aviv Open. Apart from the chances missed to play in Australia and USA, if his greatest rival Rafael Nadal was not able to stop him in French Open Semi-finals, he would have had a perfect year on the courts.
With still a tournament to play in ATP Finals, Turin, this year, Djokovic will be looking to add a record equaling 6th title to his name. This will also get him 1 title closer to Nadal’s tally of a total number of ATP titles 92. With speculations already in the corner that the gates of the Australian Open will be open to Djokovic in 2023, the tennis world is looking forward to the race for titles between the big 2 left.
