Overnight star, Frances Tiafoe fails to join his fellow Americans in the third round of the Australian Open after being completely outplayed by his opponent Tomas Machac. After entering the tournament as one of the strongest Americans on tour, Tiafoe faced an early exit at the Open.
After a hard-fought victory in his first-round match, the American was left stunned in his second fixture. He had no answers to the amazing shots from Machac. The Czech played a variety of forehands and droop shots to win the match in straight sets. Machac won the game 6-4,6-4,7-6(5) to find himself through to his first third-round appearance.
Tiafoe displayed resilience in holding his serves but eventually got broken through resulting in an embarrassing loss. Moreover, the ‘Break Point’ star had to face the wrath of social media where his fans were equally disappointed in his tennis. “A true embarrassment,” tweeted a fan on X.
This was the first Top 20 win for the Czech who advanced to the second week of the tournament to face Karen Khachanov. Maintaining his composure throughout the game, the 23-year-old got his break into the next round of the tournament.
Fans angry on Frances Tiafoe as other American stars advance to the third round at the Australian Open
A forgetful run at the Australian Open for Tiafoe as the American superstar fails to make it through to the third round of the tournament.
With only three career titles to his name, Tiafoe fails to make another deep run at a Slam event continuing his drought. This loss triggered a wave of reactions from the fans, who were evidently disappointed in the American favorite. However, other fellow countrymen of his continue moving forward in the tournament.
Making it to the third round are the likes of Taylor Fritz, Coco Gauff, and Ben Shelton, who all managed to enter the Round of 32. While Fritz and Gauff finished their matches in straight sets, Shelton did it in four. With the hunger in the eyes of all the players, the tournament promises to get that much more exciting as the rounds get over.
