World number 10 Frances Tiafoe is without a doubt a strong crowd favorite at his home Grand Slam. The number 2 ranked American will make his 9th main draw appearance at the upcoming US Open, the most out of all Grand Slams for him. With his first main-draw appearance coming in 2015, Tiafoe’s best Grand Slam finish came in last year’s US Open. The American was defeated by the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in an entertaining 5-setter.

It comes as no surprise that Tiafoe enjoys the US Open the most. Talking about the fans in a pre-tournament press briefing, Tiafoe said, “You asked about why the US Open is the best slam. I mean, ’cause you can’t beat the rowdy fans here. Everyone past 3 a.m. is drunk as hell, just having an unbelievable time. The ref has no shot at controlling that atmosphere. Just let it go and let it do what it does.” Tiafoe went on to call the US Open one of the best sporting events in the world.

Earlier Novak Djokovic had called the US Open night sessions as the best in sport. Djokovic said that there was something about the night sessions that got the players going. Going by Tiafoe’s words, that ‘something’ is the spectators. On being questioned about the state of tennis in the USA, Tiafoe replied, “American tennis is in a great spot. It’s been probably the best spot it has been in a really long time.”

On June 19, 2023, Frances Tiafoe became only the third Black American man to be ranked in the top 10 by the ATP, after Arthur Ashe and James Blake. Talking about the pressure on him coming into the tournament, Tiafoe said, “Everyone’s pretty excited to come out watch me play. Everyone wants to see me do well. Obviously there’s a level of expectation.” The American said that he enjoys playing tennis at the Flushing Meadows. Tiafoe also said that he has high self-belief heading into his home Grand Slam after last year’s deep run at the tournament.

Andy Roddick was the last American to win the men’s singles title at the US Open. Roddick defeated Alcaraz’s coach Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final of the 2023 US Open. Tiafoe believes that an American winning men’s singles Grand Slam title is a matter of time now. Tiafoe returned to Arthur Ashe Stadium as he played Carlos Alcaraz in an exhibition match.

The world number 10 will begin his 2023 US Open campaign with the first-round match against Wildcard entrant Learner Tien.
