American star Frances Tiafoe has been in a new controversy as he loses his temper and smashes his rackets after an argument with the tournament director of Davis Cup. To make things more controversial, the USA lost the tie with a point penalty on the match point. This was Tiafoe’s second straight loss in the Davis Cup and with this, the USA lost to the Netherlands 1-2 overall.

The crazy things happened during Tiafoe’s encounter with Tallon Griekspoor in the group stage of Davis Cup. In an all-important match for the USA after they lost the first match and trailing 0-1 already, Tiafoe was expected to make his mark in the tournament with a poor show in his first match against Croatia. Eventually, the USA won the tie against Croatia 2-1 despite Tiafoe’s loss.

The viral video of Tiafoe losing his temper is making rounds on the Internet. The clip has been shared by most of the highly followed pages already and got enough engagements, as expected. Tiafoe is struggling quite a bit throughout the tournament and his losing the temper is understood to be a release of emotions popping out of continuous failures.

What exactly happened in the Tiafoe-Griekspoor match?

On the other side of the story, in a crucial match and with a wrong call by the Umpire, Tiafoe’s anger was considered natural by a section of the fans. Things became intense when Tallon Griekspoor was leading Tiafoe 5-2 in the third set tiebreaker. An ace by Griekspoor was wrongly called by the umpire. The Dutch challenged the call, and he was right. Then, the umpire awarded the point to the Dutch to bring him 4 match points.

However, Tiafoe argued that the point should be replayed as the Umpire’s call came before he hit the ball. After arguing with the umpire and then the match referee, Tiafoe lost his cool and smashed his racket. This led to a point penalty, and the match was awarded to the Netherlands with a 7-2 tiebreaker. The final score read as 6-3, 6-7(7-9), 7-6(7-2) in the favor of the Dutch.

The USA now is in the second position of the group behind Netherlands. They have the last tie with Finland. USA’s chances now in the Davis Cup depend on the result of the Netherlands-Croatia tie as well.
