Frances Tiafoe reveals his biggest goal taking inspiration from Serena Williams
US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe recently revealed in an interview that 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams and her sister Venus mean a lot to him and other people from his ethnicity because they are true icons.
“Serena means everything to me and to so many other people. She is a true icon, both her and her sister. She is the real reason I have always believed I could be someone in the world of tennis. As a black person, I want to receive that respect that Serena had. When I finish my career, if many kids who look like me are playing tennis, then I will feel like I have won. That is my biggest goal,” said Tiafoe.
Tiafoe himself has ancestral roots in Sierra Leone, a country in West Africa. African-American tennis player Serena retired from the sport at the recently concluded US Open, where Tiafoe lost in the semis to eventual winner Carlos Alcaraz. Tiafoe made huge strides and improvements in his game during the major tournament, taking out names such as Rafael Nadal and Andrey Rublev.
“I’m trying to keep the main thing. I’m very curious to see how far I can go in this sport. I have a lot of things to give to tennis. I think it’s good for the sport that I do well,” added Tiafoe.
“This last month has been absolutely crazy. I’ve been getting a lot of attention lately, it’s clear that the media noise is part of these types of results, but I’m very clear that the fans can be cheering you on one day and the next you’re already forgotten, so individual sports work,” he added referring to his performances at the US Open and Laver Cup, where his Team World beat Team Europe for the first time in history.
