Tennis player Frances Tiafoe has vowed to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam title after two decades of no Slam champions from the country in the men’s category. Andy Roddick was the last man from the United States to claim the US Open title way back in 2003.
America’s last Grand Slam major win in men’s singles came way back in 2003 when Andy Roddick beat Juan Carlos Ferrero in the 2003 US Open to claim the championship title in straight sets. However, thanks to the legend, Roger Federer, Roddick did end up in the finals of four more Grand Slams, but he lost every single one of them to Federer.
However, many see in Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz the men who might have just what it takes to break free of the 20-year drought. Both Americans are in the Top 10 on the ATP ranking scale. Fritz and Tiafoe hold the 9th and 10th places, respectively, and are in great form this season.
Tommy Paul is another great player who has the potential to shock tennis fans with his game. The 26-year-old, ranked 14th in the world, beat top seed Carlos Alcaraz earlier this month. He also made it to the semifinals of the Australian Open this year.
Speaking to the reporters in an on-court interview after his second-round win, Tiafoe expressed his desire to see an American man lift the Grand Slam trophy. “Me and Taylor are top 10. Tommy’s knocking on the door. We all grew up together. American tennis is in a good place,” he said.
He further added, “Hopefully we all keep going & we stop that streak of Roddick in 2003. Hopefully it happens here”.
Can America win the singles Grand Slam again?
Although Roddick was the last man to win a Grand Slam single for his country in 2003, several others have dominated the charts for America in different categories since. The Williams sisters, Slone Stephens and Sofia Kenin, have each won at least one Grand Slam for the country in the women’s category since 2003.
Though it won’t come easy for Tiafoe, Fritz, or Paul to win a Grand Slam title, they exist in the same era as 23-time Grand Slam title winner Novak Djokovic and emerging young players like Carlos Alcaraz. The American men do stand a good chance of winning a Grand Slam title soon.
