Casper Ruud had his share of badluck due to an injury to start the year but bounced back to win the Argentina Open on clay. He then made it to his first Masters final at Miami where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz. He struggled a lot unexpectedly in the European clay season where his best result was a semifinal outing at the Rome Masters until he peaked at the right time to win the Geneva Open.

At the French Open, he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Emil Ruusuvuori in the initial rounds before beating Lorenzo Sonego in five sets in the third round. He then registered a solid victory over Hubert Hurkacz in the Round of 16 in four sets 6-2,6-3,3-6,6-3.

A lot was talked about Holger Rune at the start of the season but he had a worst possible start. He didn’t win any main draw matches in the first 5 tournaments he played and won his first match in Marseille. He then went back to Challenger circuit to win the Sanremo Challenger. He then reached back-to-back second rounds at Monte Carlo and Belgrade before winning the Bavarian International. He then also reached the semifinal of the Lyon Open.

This fortnight in Paris, he had played like a dream. He stunned Denis Shapovalov in the opening round and then eased past Henri Laaksonen and Hugo Gaston in the next two rounds before upsetting 4th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round in four sets 7-5,3-6,6-3,6-4.

He is the second highest ranked player remaining in the bottom half and hence would be desperate to make the most out of it. His baseline strokes will definitely hurt Ruud but given Rune’s inexperience, the No.8 seed will fancy his chances to reach his maiden grand slam semifinal.
