Iga Swiatek vs Coco Gauff: Preview
Iga Swiatek has always been a natural talent on clay. She burst into the scenes at the 2020 French Open as a teenager where she won the title despite being an unseeded player. Since then, the Pole has only risen up the ranks. But 2022 has truly brought out the very in her. She has redefined consistency that was unseen in women’s tennis. She started the season by reaching the semifinal of the Australian Open and then bowed out of the Round of 16 of the Dubai Tennis Championship. Since then, Swiatek hasn’t lost a match. She won her maiden WTA 1000 title on hardcourts at Doha and then completed a Sunshine Double, i.e. she won three consecutive WTA 1000 titles.
She then started her clay season with a title triumph and Stuttgart and then won her 5th consecutive WTA 1000 title in Rome. This fortnight in Rome, Swiatek has been as dominant as ever. She eased past the likes of Lesia Tsurenko, Alison Riske, and Danka Kovinic in the initial rounds before getting tested by Qinwen Zheng in the fourth round. She then defeated Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinal before thrashing Daria Kasatkina in the semifinals in straight sets 6-2,6-1.
A few years ago, a 15-year-old girl defeated multiple time Wimbledon Champion Venus Williams at SW19 and it was termed as the passing of the baton in American tennis. The wait has been a bit long, but Coco Gauff has finally delivered and is into her maiden grand slam final. She had a very poor start to the season where she lost in the first round at Melbourne and Dubai but bounced back with a quarterfinal outing at the Qatar Open. She then didn’t have an ideal Golden Swing on home soil and didn’t have a great clay-court season wither with Round of 16 outings at Madrid and Rome being her best results.
But the 18-year-old has punched well above her weight this fortnight at Roland Garros. She battles past Rebecca Marino, Alison Van Uytvanck, and Kaia Kanepi in the third round and then bageled Elise Mertens in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinal, she defeated Sloane Stephens and then blasted past Martina Trevisan in the semifinals in straight sets 6-3,6-1. It is to be noted that Gauff is yet to drop a set at the 2022 French Open.
Iga Swiatek vs Coco Gauff: Head-to-Head
This will be the third meeting between the duo. Swiatek leads the H2H 2-0. They met at Miami earlier this year where Swiatek won in straight sets.

Iga Swiatek vs Coco Gauff: Prediction
The match is perfectly poised with two young champions battling it out to stamp their authority in women’s tennis. While Swiatek will be the obvious favorite, it will be interesting to see how she battles past her nerves. She is currently on a 34-match winning streak and if she wins, not only will she win her second major title, but she will also hold the record for the longest winning streak of this century.
Gauff, on the other hand, has nothing to lose. She has already exceeded all expectations and will be a huge underdog in the final. She is yet to drop a set this fortnight but beating Swiatek, who is the best player in the world by a mile on her favorite surface will take a heroic effort. Having said that, the women’s singles final should be an epic with the Pole winning her second title on the Parisian clay.
Prediction: Swiatek to win in three sets.
