Not much was known about Martina Trevisan until a few weeks ago. She reached the second round of the Australian Open as a qualifier and also made it to the second round of the Lyon Open. She performed well on the WTA 125 and ITF circuit but didn’t make any impact on the tour level. She had zero main draw victories on clay this season until the Morocco Open where she went all the way to win her maiden WTA Tour title and since then, Trevisan hasn’t lost a match.
This week in Paris, she eased past Harriet Dart and Magda Linette in the early rounds before beating Daria Saville in the third round. She then got the better of Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the Round of 16 and then defeated US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez in the quarterfinal in three sets 6-2,6-7(3),6-3 to reach her maiden grand slam final.
A lot was expected from Coco Gauff but she didn’t have a great start to the 2022 season. She lost in the first round at Melbourne and Dubai but had a solid quarterfinal outing at the Qatar Open. She had a poor Golden Swing where she managed to win just 3 matches and didn’t have the best clay-court season start either with a couple of Round of 16 outings at Madrid and Rome.
But she has played some of her best tennis this fortnight in Paris. She is yet to drop a set this tournament and eased past the likes of Rebecca Marino and Alison Van Uytvanck in the initial rounds. She then defeated Estonian veteran Kaia Kanepi in the third round before blasting past Elise Mertens in the Round of 16. She then got the better of Sloane Stephens in the quarterfinals to reach the last 4.

This will be the second meeting between the duo. Trevisan leads the H2H 1-0. They met at Roland Garros a couple of years ago where Trevisan won in three sets.

Nobody expected either Gauff or Trevisan to reach so deep in the tournament. Both players have punched above their weight and are eyeing reaching their maiden grand slam final. Gauff is definitely more consistent than the Italian but Trevisan herself is riding on a 10-match winning streak. Having said that, Gauff’s big match experience will come in handy and the teenager is expected to reach her maiden major final on Thursday.
Prediction: Gauff to win in three sets.
