Carlos Alcaraz won the 2nd round encounter against Taro Daniel in a tricky encounter. After the match was level at 1 set all, the Spaniard kept his focus to win the match in 4 sets. The score line of the match was 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The Spaniard has been in good form lately and is playing at the French Open in 2023 after having a good run in the ongoing clay court swing. The world number 1 had won the Madrid Masters by defeating German Jan Lennard Struff in a 3-set encounter. However, Alcaraz lost in the third round of the Rome Masters, which was quite unexpected given his recent results. The 20-year-old made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament last year. He would be hoping for a better result this time.

Denis Shapovalov has been struggling to win consecutive matches in a tournament since the start of 2023. This is the first time since the Australian Open in 2023 that the Canadian has been able to win back-to-back matches.

Talking about his previous match, he won the match against Italian Matteo Arnaldi in four sets with a score line of 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. The world number 32 also overcame talented American Brandon Nakashima in the first round in a thrilling 5-set encounter. The score line of the match was 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3.

It will be interesting to see how the Canadian performs against the top seed.

As far as head-to-head is concerned, the duo haven’t played in the past and therefore this will be their 1st encounter.
