Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev have set up a really juicy semifinal match against each other on 9th June. Both the players were not on the list of semifinalists’ predictions for a lot of tennis experts. However, the last two weeks have proved very fruitful for both of these gentlemen. Both of them have been effective in their game. Both of them have played a few 4 setters, but they ensured they finish the match efficiently and did not have to go to the 5th.

Both Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev are following up on a below-average 2023. But things turned around for both at the Parisian clay. Casper Ruud faced some early-round losses at tournaments. He only ended up winning an ATP250 at the Estoril Open. Whereas Zverev was coming back from a gruesome injury. He suffered the injury in the same stage, semifinal against Rafael Nadal.

Zverev had snapped his ankle brutally, and that kept him out for most of 2022. Both the players have reached this stage of Roland Garros before. Ruud went on to win the semi-final match in 2022, to set up a final with Rafael Nadal. Whereas this is the third consecutive year that Zverev has reached the semifinal stage.

Ruud played an immaculate quarterfinal against Dane Holger Rune. As mentioned above, he was effective and efficient. Though he lost some concentration in the 3rd set, he got back on the disciplined game he is known for and took the match away in the 4th set. He also had a narrow escape against Chilean Nicholas Jarry, who played in great form at the French Open.

He also had a great battle with China’s Zhang Zhizhen, which he fought back and won in 4 sets, despite losing the first set. Casper Ruud seems very confident despite not doing a great deal well in 2023. With his confidence, calmness, and disciplined game, he could be a great threat to Alexander Zverev.

On the other hand, the German has made his way into the semifinal with a relatively easier draw. His time to shine came from the third-round win against 12th-seeded Frances Tiafoe. Zverev won the match in 4 sets. Zverev also showed off his experience in the round of 16 match against Grigor Dimitrov.

Though it was a 3-setter, Dimitrov used to take the lead in sets, only to be fought back by Zverev. Even in the quarter-final match, he did bravely against Tomas Martin Etcheverry. If he could bring back the same way he played against Rafael Nadal in the 2022 semifinal before he got injured he could give Ruud a run for his money.

Ruud and Zverev have played three times, though never on clay. Zverev has won twice. But Ruud has won their most recent meeting of 2022. He won the quarterfinal in three sets in the Miami Open. This match is very equally poised and will be contested between equally matched players. Talking of strengths in this French Open, Ruud has had a great amount of success with his forehand. Whereas Zverev has been lethal with his backhand.

Though Zverev has the bigger serve of the two, the Scandinavian hardly misses the base and the sidelines. There would definitely be a lot of fight and play in this contest but Casper Ruud might take the cherry ultimately.

Match Prediction: Casper Ruud to win in 4 sets
