‘From a struggling teenager to a dominating champion’ Iga Swiatek’s psychologist reveals reasons behind her incredible rise

Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek has become one of the most fearsome players on the planet after the retirement of former world number 1, Ashleigh Barty. She has won four tournaments in a row and she is not looking to stop. She has a 23-match unbeaten streak and she opted to withdraw from the Madrid Open 2022 citing a shoulder injury. She has been playing non-stop this year and she has been performing at the highest level.

She would like to give a rest to her shoulder before she will return for another French Open title. The form she is currently in makes her one of the front-runners to win at the Roland-Garros. She went from a teenager suffering from pressure-coping problems to a champion.

Daris Abramowicz is Iga Swiatek‘s personal sports psychologist and she has been working with the Polish superstar to mold her into having a great mindset both on and off the court and helping her deal with the critical moments. In an interview with Reuters she said: “We are trying to build resources that help not only manage challenges in terms of losses or something that needs to be corrected”

“We also build resources for those moments when an athlete or a team achieves the goal. We are talking for many months now on how to manage potential success also.

This is something that actually is interesting across society – people are not fully equipped to manage success sometimes. It actually brings more stress sometimes, maybe even a little anxiety in some cases, feeling insecure when they achieve the goals because they don’t know what’s next.” “Iga has more and more resources to be able to tackle more challenges that will come with being in this position,”

Abramowicz also said, “And I’m really proud of how she’s managing that so far.

It was vital for Iga to have a person helping her get mentally more mature, as she was only 19 when she won the French Open and the pressure of both being a celebrity and other challenges that came with it. The subsequent performance of Swiatek has proved that it was all worth it. Fans were expecting a fifth tournament win for Iga but she has rightly opted to take care of her golden arm and return in time for the Grand Slam.
