“Fundamental distortion of the sport” Jon Wertheim stands in support of Taylor Fritz’s disagreement for getting on-court assistance
Jon Wertheim and Taylor Fritz
Taylor Fritz had a fair share of good performances under his belt at the Cincinnati Open where he defeated the in-form Citi Open winner Nick Kyrgios in the second round followed by defeating Andrey Rublev in the next round but soon his run got a break when he lost to the World number 1 Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-final match. But the American had a tough time when he lost back-to-back to Dan Evans twice in the hard-court season, i.e., at the Citi Open and at the Canadian Open.
One of the remarkable performances shown by Fritz was at the Indian Wells Masters event when he defeated Rafael Nadal in the finals to win his first Masters1000 title. But soon he was defeated by the Spaniard in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Wimbledon Championship in an exciting and thrilling match where both the players played exceptionally well.
“It was great of him to say and he did not receive many blowbacks” Jon Wertheim in support of Taylor Fritz’s opinion on off-court assistance
Jon Wertheim, a renowned sports journalist, came out in support of Taylor Fritz‘s opinion to regard such rule change as ‘dumb‘ and ‘totally illogical‘ since tennis is an individual sport. Upon being asked about his views on off-court coaching, Wertheim said “I think most coaches disagree with Taylor Fritz’s words, but you will notice that Fritz did not get a lot of blowback for that. Nor should he have. I think that was great of him to say. This is absolutely a fundamental distortion of tennis.”
He further revealed that the changes would totally distort the fundamental rules of the sport. He added “This isn’t some little tweak that ‘hey we can try no towels or we can try to have automated line calling,’ this is really fundamental to tennis. To just sort of slip it in and say we’re going to trial this, I think it is almost immoral. Hey, don’t allow hands in soccer. Well, you know what? That’s fundamental to soccer, you don’t just slip it in because other sports happen to do it. I am on Team Fritz and I have not heard a lot of blowbacks, a lot of opposition to what Taylor very courageously said“
As per the latest developments, the ATP has decided to allow off-court coaching in tennis matches for the remaining part of the season. Although it is on a trial basis, it will be implemented at the US Open and will run through the final event in Turin in November.
