In sports, players as well as the fans become extremely curious. When your spouse is playing in another match, you are naturally curious about how they are doing. Such an incident took place in the second round of the US Open.
Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina are the power couple in tennis. Both of them had successfully advanced to the second round, but Gael lost to the Russian Andrey Rublev, and Elina won her match to advance to the third round. In an interview, he admitted that he asked the chair umpire about his wife’s score after she did the same during her match.
“I haven’t seen it. For me, I asked. It was 5-3 for her in the 3rd set. I said to the umpire ‘Be discreet’. We both like to know everything’s going good.” laughingly said Gael. However, unlike Elina, Gael lost 4-6,3-6,6-3,1-6 as he could only win one set but lost the last one pretty cheaply.
Gael Monfils is curious about his wife Elina’s match
In a recent interview, Gael revealed that he was very curious about what was going on in his wife’s match and had asked the chair umpire to update him. Many were surprised by this, but as it appears, even Elina Svitolina had done the same thing. Their close bond was evident when Elina asked the chair umpire for Gael’s score during her match. Even though they were not playing together, she was still thinking about him and wanted to know how he was doing.
This is an example of how one can be very engrossed in an activity and still have their mind wander. It’s not every day that you find tennis players inquiring about their partner’s games. Gael is unfortunately out of the US Open, but he will continue to cheer on his partner, Elina, who will face her toughest opponent yet. She will have to face world number three Jessica Pegula.
This game of tennis is sure to be interesting, as both players are top contenders and will need to overcome their hardest challenge yet to advance and win the title. Nonetheless, Gael and Svitolina are true tennis players who will continue to support each other on and off the court.
