Gael Monfils has been out due to a wrist injury for quite some time now but expects to be back in time for the UTS tournament to be played in California in the coming week. He last played against Holger Rune at the French Open in the second round, retiring due to intense pain in the wrist. But he has finally stated what really boosted his confidence and recovery, and it was none other than his wife, Elina Svitolina‘s, performance at the recently played Wimbledon Championships.
In an interview with Tennis Majors recently, he spoke about how well his wife performed, making it to the semis, and how she has inspired her and also several countrymen back in Ukraine. Svitolina beat four former Grand Slam winners on her way to the semis, with Gael saying, “I was proud and inspired. Just proud of my wife, to be honest. How much work she has put in to be at that level. How much discipline she had.”
Monfils added, “I was amazed by her strength, mentally, in some matches, to turn them around and then come back for her next match – I was proud and inspired. This is why I feel like a champion right now. It has been an amazing month for me, watching my wife do fantastic, and I have had quality time with my daughter as well, so you know I’m just full of energy and really want to do well during this tour.”
How Elina Evitolina’s performance at Wimbledon will be remembered for a long time?
Elina Svitoliona’s performance at the recently played Wimbledon Championships was nothing short of impressive, and her performance has left a whole generation of superstars still talking about her. Although she didn’t manage to lift the golden trophy in the end, getting knocked out by Marketa Vondrousova in the semis, it still takes a lot of guts and strength to overcome everything she has gone through in the last couple of months.
She was heavily heartbroken by her country’s recent crisis as the Russian illegally occupied territories through invasion. A few months after she was out of the sport, she gave birth to her daughter. But just starting off fresh and returning to the court in April, it is simply beyond description how she had achieved this milestone amidst everything.
