The one thing that has haunted Gael Monfils for years is his head-to-head against Novak Djokovic. The very fact that he hasn’t tasted success even once in his 19 attempts is queer and funny. He has just not been able to crack the code, and with this 19th straight loss, he becomes part of an unfortunate record of being the only player to have a 0-19 record against any other player.
In an interview with L’Equipe the Frenchman talked about his rivalry with the Serb and also mentioned Rafael Nadal. After his most recent loss to Djokovic at the Cincinnati Masters in Mason, Ohio, the Frenchman disclosed his thoughts about the whole head-to-head topic. It was a round-of-16 clash, and Monfils just didn’t seem to understand the Serb’s box of tricks.
“I’m struggling to find a solution, he’s stronger than me. I had the success of beating Rafa once or twice, but it’s the same, the guy is stronger. I try to do things, but I can’t. When I get into the game, I want to find the solution, but I can’t and it hurts,” said Monfils after his loss.
He lost comfortably in straight sets to the Serb. The final scoreline read 6-3, 6-2. The Frenchman will certainly be disappointed and will like to at least notch up one win over the Serb. He has previously come very close to doing that, but Djokovic has always stayed very strong mentally and has won the battle.
Monfils feels even a win over Djokovic will not spoil anything for the Serb
Gael Monfils, with so many losses against Djokovic, will certainly pray to get that elusive win over the Serb. He did have a golden chance in 2020 at the Dubai Championships in a semi-final match. He had multiple match points but couldn’t take any. In the same interview, Monfils also spoke about how he would feel if he ever won a match against Djokovic.
This is what the Frenchman said. “People have this thing on top of 19–0. But if I play it 25 times, it might be 25–0. And if one day I manage to snatch a match, I will be very happy, but he will remain stronger than me.”
He did mention the possibility of 25-0 and then, at the same time, mentioned how he would feel if he won. He clearly expressed that he would be happy, but he knows that Djokovic will still be the stronger player and a tough force to deal with.
