The match at the UTS Los Angeles between Gael Monfils and Alexander Bublik was all about exotic trick shots and amusing banter as they entertained the crowd with their on-court antics. Monfils emerged victorious, winning the match 3-0, but the event was not just about the game. It also featured a lighthearted exchange between Monfils and French soccer star Olivier Giroud.

During a break between quarters, French football star Olivier Giroud joined the commentary box and engaged in a lighthearted conversation with Monfils. Giroud, who’s 36 like Monfils, decided to be generous enough to share a tip or two to age gracefully. “We’re both 36. Dying the hair makes you seem younger. Maybe you should try it,” said Giroud jokingly.

“Give me your hairdresser number. Maybe I will if my wife allows,” Monfils replied, taking a dig at his wife, Elina Svitolina. Monfils-Svitolina is amongst the few happy couple stories on the tour. Having married in 2021, Svitolina recently gave birth to a baby girl.

While the match was filled with entertaining moments, the scoreboard favored Monfils. He dominated the match, winning all three quarters. The final quarter was particularly exciting, with consecutive tweeners being executed, showcasing the players’ skills and creativity. However, the fourth tweener hit long, bringing an end to the match.

Now at age 36 and having started a family, it may seem that Monfils is in the twilight stage of his career. He has had a fairly successful career, with 11 ATP titles, and a career-high ranking of World No. 6. Some critics and fans still believe that given his athletic prowess, Monfils has underachieved so far in his career.

However, Monfils’ greatest gift by far is his ability to entertain spectators without having to compromise on his game. He has given fans so many iconic and hilarious moments to remember him by that some believe that he may never be truly replaced.

Monfils is set to appear at the Atlanta Open to face Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis tomorrow.
