In the world of sports, couples are usually nervous when their partner is playing a match. Even Gael Monfils, the husband of WTA star Elina Svitolina, feels extremely nervous when his wife is playing a game.
Ahead of the tournament in Auckland, Gael Monfils gets candid with the local media and opens up about one of the few problems he faces on the Tour with his wife.
He explains the feeling of nervousness he feels while his wife is playing and vice versa, as both players wish well for one another and hope that the other plays well. But he also adds that they have great support and can count on one another to cheer themselves on and try to calm their nerves.
Today, with Elina on tour, it's a little more stressful because we always want each other to play well, so it's like you're playing two matches instead of one. But in the end, for both of us, it's a big help. We have great support and we can count on each other.Said Gael Monfils in an interview
As a fairly new couple to parenthood, both players are juggling their lives between their children and their careers and, till now, have managed well. While Svitolina is currently in good form and trying to climb the ranks, Monfils, one of the fastest players on the court, has not been bad either, as he recently won his 12th career title.
With 2024 coming sooner than ever, both players will look to perform their best and have a season to remember.
