“Getting ready to save the sport again!”Tennis Twitter elated upon finding Roger Federer’s return to the court
Roger Federer
Roger Federer, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, played his last match at Wimbledon in 2021 where he lost to Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals clash in straight sets. This was the first time in 19 years at Wimbledon that he had lost in straight sets. It was followed by a knee surgery that kept him out of action for months as part of rehabilitation and full recovery. He was part of the 100th-anniversary celebration of the Centre Court at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship. The 8-time Wimbledon singles champion expressed his desire to come back to the court and play.
The former World number one is likely to make his return at the Laver Cup in the star-studded team Europe which has Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Casper Ruud as teammates and the team is led by Captain Bjorn Borg. Team Europe will be fighting for their fifth consecutive title. Federer returned back to the hard court for making a good practice session after quite a long time just ahead of the US Open which starts on 29 August. He will keep his schedule minimum as much as possible this season and rather will be looking to use the remaining months to build up for the next year.
