The 2023 Wimbledon Final went right down to the wire with both Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic showing nerves of steel. Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar heaped praise on Djokovic for showing great mental toughness against a younger opponent. Tendulkar lauded the Serbian tennis star for pushing hard despite his body not coping.
Novak Djokovic had a perfect start to the all-important final as the 36-year-old clinched the first set 6-1. However, Carlos Alcaraz was up for the challenge in the second set as the Spaniard took it tiebreaker and eventually win it 8-6. Alcaraz then won the third set as well (6-1) with Djokovic seemingly getting worked up.
The Serbian tennis maestro was finding it tough to match the reflexes of his younger opponent and hence ended up conceding quite a few points. But despite his body not stepping up to the challenge, Djokovic kept pushing hard and this is what impressed Sachin.
“Mental toughness = Novak Djokovic. Despite having issues with his body, the mind continues to push him forward. What a player!” tweeted Tendulkar.
Harsha Bhogle also impressed with Novak Djokovic
Not only Sachin Tendulkar but famous cricket commentator cum analyst Harsha Bhogle praised Novak Djokovic for his small comebacks in the big game.“Got to admire Djokovic. He is raging against the dying of the light. Not conceding an inch to a stronger, younger opponent,” wrote Bhogle for the 23-time Grand Slam champion.
Meanwhile, former India Head Coach Ravi Shastri went all the way to the All England Club to watch the thrilling action live from ground zero. Shastri shared his pictures of enjoying the match between the master and the apprentice from the stadium.
Although Djokovic showed nerves of steel and fought shoulder-to-shoulder with an opponent 16 years younger than him, the Serb could not win a record-breaking eighth Wimbledon title. The apprentice broke Djokovic’s dominance on the grass court winning Wimbledon 2023. Carlos Alcaraz won 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in over 4.5 hours.
