Nick Kyrgios is looking at his best in Wimbledon 2022. The weakened draw due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players as well as players like Matteo Berrettini and Marin Cilic withdrawing due to Covid gave Kyrgios a golden opportunity to go far, and the Aussie took it with both hands. His match against Filip Krajnovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas is a testament to the danger the big-serving Kyrgios poses on the grass. With the draw wide open he has a chance to make it to the semifinal where he will likely face Rafael Nadal.

Kyrgios’s best result was the quarterfinal appearance in Wimbledon 2014 where he beat Rafa to enter the quarterfinal, but after that, he has not lived up to his potential. In his fourth-round matchup against Brandon Nakashima, a young American sensation, Kyrgios is the favorite to make it to the quarterfinal in that match. Mats Wilander, the former world number 1 believes it’s going to take a big player to stop Kyrgios who is currently playing at his best.

Even though the Tsitsipas-Kyrgios match was spoilt due to the usual Nick Kyrgios drama and outbursts, Stefanos too lost his cool and suffered a meltdown, affecting his performance and Kyrgios didn’t let it slip. Kyrgios was heavily criticized for his disruptive behavior and was labeled a ‘bully’ by Tsitsipas, but Wilander believes that these actions show how much he wants to win these matches. He said: “I think that what came out against Stefanos Tsitsipas is him really, really wanting to win tennis matches. And with that comes maybe a little bit more of him talking and of him being upset, and of his style of entertainment.”

Wilander continued: “I think he’s a different person right here in this tournament, I think he’s more focussed than his time around than I’ve ever seen him, except maybe a couple of years at the Australian Open. I think he’s playing and serving great, and it’s going to take a big player to beat him.” He also ended with a bit of hope that Kyrgios keep his outbursts under check. Wilander said: “Most people are going to be glued to the TV – including me – but I just hope that it goes in a little bit more of a positive direction in terms of the spirit and behavior on court.”
