Andy Murray defeated Nick Kyrgios 7-6, 6-2 in the Stuttgart Open semi-finals to set up a final against Matteo Berrettini. Murray was playing in his first tour-level semi-final since 2016 when he defeated Tomas Berdych in straight sets before overcoming Milos Raonic to win his last Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon.
Like every other match featuring Kyrgios, this one was rife with controversy. Nick Kyrgios was given a point and a game penalty in quick succession after losing the first set in his Stuttgart Open semi-final against Andy Murray. The triumph of the British player in the first-set tie-break generated a strong reaction, which was met with revenge. He then smashed his racket, earning himself another game penalty for unsportsmanlike behaviour. The Australian also had an argument with the umpire.
Leaving aside the contentious issues, there was one point in the match when Kyrgios won the hearts of the spectators and put on a good performance in the Stuttgart stadium with his legendary Tweener shot. In the first set of his matchup against Andy Murray, Kyrgios went between his legs for an impressive return which left the Brit and the audience wonder-struck.
