The 2023 season in tennis has ended and the award season has begun to praise the players for their hard work and achievements throughout the year. However, there have been quite some conflicts on this issue regarding Novak Djokovic. ATP chose Jannik Sinner’s coaches as the winners for the Coach of the Year over Goran Ivanisevic, coach of Djokovic.
This turned a few heads as fans witnessed Djokovic dominate the roster even at the age of 36 and still, he was unable to win an award nor did his coach win an award. Former tennis player Greg Rusedski also finds it strange that Ivanisevic did not win the award despite his player’s dominance throughout the year with 3 Grand Slams to his name along with the tag of world number 1.
Even Djokovic found it weird that his coach did not win the award and even made a post congratulating the two coaches of Sinner while simultaneously praising his coach and indirectly calling out the ATP for their unfair decision. While Darren Cahill did an amazing job on Sinner making him one of the most noticed players towards the end of the season, it does not take away the heroics of Djokovic who was one match away from winning a Calendar Slam.
Here is what Rusedski had to say on X:
Strange one match away from the calendar slam. 24 majors and counting. Darren Cahill has done a great job with Sinner, but only one man deserves coach of the year and that is Goran. Harder to stay at the top than to get there ,especially at 36 years young.Greg Rusedski on X
