The 2023 Wimbledon continues to see Holger Rune stamp his authority as an all-courter. The sixth-seeded Dane was up against Bulgarian hero Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round on the No. 1 Court. Despite losing the first set, Rune went on to win the match 3-6, 7-6(6), 7-6(4), 6-3 to make the quarter-finals.
He is into his first quarter-finals at the Championships and third at Grand Slams overall. Coming from a quarter-final run in the French Open, the young gun is back into the last-8 of yet another Major. Dimitrov’s service game cost him dearly in the final two sets as his double faults increased at the wrong time.
Dimitrov tried to make a comeback but it was too late. He served his game out to make it 5-3 in the third set. He even started well on Rune’s serve but the sixth seed was better prepared. He did not let it slip and converted his first match point to claim the win and advance ahead into the business end of the Grand Slam.
When asked if he fears any opponent in the remaining field, Rune replied, “I’m not afraid, but I am excited,” as he concluded the on-court interview with a big smile for everyone on the No. 1 Court.
Holger Rune moves closer to the Top-5
With the entry into the quarter-finals, Holger Rune moves closer to breaking into the Top-5. The fourth-round defeat for Stefanos Tsitsipas meant the Greek can’t add any more points. A win in the quarter-finals will then take the young Dane ahead of Tsitsipas and into the top-5.
With the win, Rune now has to wait to know his next-round opponent. Battling on the Centre Court, Carlos Alcaraz and Matteo Berrettini are engrossed in a close battle. The Italian clinched the first set before Alcaraz won the next two and holds the upper hand.
The roof was finally asked to be closed as light faded halting the fourth set evenly poised at 2-2 when Rune clinched the win. While fans would want another Rune-Alcaraz battle, Berrettini will try all in his power to deny that move. As for Rune, he has already made it clear, he fears none.
