Belinda Bencic had a terrific season last year. She won a gold medal in the women’s singles tennis event and a silver medal in the women’s singles tennis event at Tokyo Olympics 2020. This year so far is filled with both highs and lows. Bencic lost to Amanda Anisimova in the second round of the Australian Open. In St. Petersburg too, she lost out to eventual champion Anett Kontaveit in the quarterfinal. She then crashed out of both Qatar and Indian Wells Open.

Soon she picked up some form and made it to the semi-final of the Miami Open and won the Charleston Open. But again she was on the backfoot as she crashed out of the Madrid Open and the French Open in the Round of 16 and third round respectively. Bencic then played at the German Open losing the final to Ons Jabeur. At Wimbledon, she was defeated by Wang Qiang in the first round itself.

Leylah Annie Fernandez has had a tough season this year. She did not start the season well by losing out to Maddison Inglis in the opening round of the Australian Open. She then successfully defended her Monterrey Open title. She then participated in the Indian Wells Open and reached the fourth round. In the quarterfinal match of the Roland Garros, she lost out to Martina Trevisan.

Due to a foot injury, she could not participate in Wimbledon. At both the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Masters, she could not do much losing in the second round and first round respectively. At the US Open, she lost out to Liudmila Samsonova in the second round.

Belinda Bencic and Leylah Annie Fernandez will play against each other for the second time this year. In their previous encounter at French Open, Fernandez defeated Bencic 7-5 3-6 7-5. This time, though, Bencic is likely to win this match and advance to the next round. However, it would not be a walkover for the Swiss as Fernandez too has a few tricks of her own in her sleeves. This is going to be an interesting match and all eyes will be on Bencic as she is looking to make this season count.

Prediction: Belinda Bencic will win this match in the tiebreaker set.
