“If I had been an important player…,” Guido Pella rants after enduring verbal abuse in Miami, calls out the double standards of Tour officials
Guido Pella will be up against Denis Shapovalov in the second round of the Miami Open later tonight
Guido Pella
On Wednesday, Guido Pella emerged victorious over Juan Pablo Varillas with a score of 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Pella, who is currently ranked 581st and had been absent from the circuit for a year due to a severe knee injury, will next face No. 24 seed Denis Shapovalov. Pella’s victory at the Miami Masters 1000 marked a strong start to his return to the circuit since November 2022.
However, during the match, Pella was subjected to insults from a spectator in the gallery, prompting him to vent his frustrations both on the court and during the subsequent post-match press conference. The turbulent behavior of a spectator in Miami, who cursed Guido Pella for a set and a half, deeply disturbed the Argentinian player. He expressed his discontent with the organizers, as they took a considerable amount of time to take any action against the disruptive fan.
Pella expressed his disappointment after winning the opening round and said, “Everywhere there are people like that, it’s a shame. Firstly because we have a great friendship with Juampi (Varillas), we train and travel a lot together. That there are people who insult you in this way seems to me a shame. I put myself angry because I’m sure if I had been an important player for them they would have taken him out in the first game and with me they took a set and a half.”
He continued and said, “These are tennis things, but I’m too old to keep them to myself and that’s enough. When I’m upset about something, I say it because otherwise we’re still in the same situation.”
Mirjam Bjorklund and Denis Shapovalov advance into second round of Miami Open
During her first-round match against Jasmine Paolini at the Miami Open presented by Itau, Mirjam Bjorklund found herself locked in a deep battle in the third set. The Swedish player had never won a qualifying match at a WTA 1000 event, but she fought hard and earned herself a chance to progress to the second round of the main draw.
As Bjorklund went to retrieve her towel from the side of the court, her longtime boyfriend Denis Shapovalov could be seen in the front row, loudly cheering her on. Meanwhile, tonight, Guido Pella is set to face Denis Shapovalov in the second round of the Miami tournament. Despite losing six out of eleven matches played this season, Shapovalov remains among the top 30 players in the world.
Bjorklund and Shapovalov were born less than nine months apart, with Bjorklund currently aged 24 and Shapovalov turning 24 next month. Although they were not well-acquainted during their junior years, tennis fans worldwide are delighted by this couple’s mutual support and are thoroughly enjoying it.
