“Halle or Queen’s?” ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi confirms the Tour’s interest in conducting a Masters tournament on grass before Wimbledon
Andrea Gaudenzi
Andrea Gaudenzi, the chairman of the ATP recently confirmed the organization’s interest in conducting a Masters 1000 tournament on grass, with the tournament would be conducted as a lead-on or a build-up to the Wimbledon every year. The two premium grass tournaments held before SW19 are conducted in London’s Queen’s club and Halle and the two are the prime locations that will be potentially upgraded to a Masters 1000 event.
Currently, there are 9 Masters 1000 events held around the world, three of them are held on clay and the rest of the six are held on different hard courts. There are currently no events held on Grass so it makes sense for the ATP to conduct one on it as there is definitely room for expansion.
“Our plan is to have 10 Masters events,” Andrea Gaudenzi confirms ATP’s interest in a Masters 1000 event on grass
A 10th Masters event would make sense for all parties and seeing as there is no Masters event currently that is conducted on grass it does seem feasible that the ATP decided to conduct it on grass. Andrea Gaudenzi confirmed it recently that the ATP is looking to start organizing another Masters event either in London or in Germany.
Gaudenzi said, “Our plan is to have 10 Masters events, There are three weeks between the French Open and Wimbledon. The grass is the only surface on which a Masters 1000 tournament is not played, a grass Masters makes sense, especially in the large and important market of Germany, which was the number one tennis market in the 1990s.”
“Germans love tennis and its history. It’s the same with the UK market. It has the same chances as Germany. It offers the advantage that the players are already in London before Wimbledon. But London has Wimbledon,” Gaudenzi said in an interview with Germany’s tennis Magazin.
