“Happy to break the nerves” Dominic Thiem reaches his first Tour semi-final after 14 months in the Swiss Open

Dominic Thiem, the 28-year-old Austrian after losing out in the quarter-finals of the Swedish Open has turned it around in the Swiss Open in Gstaad, reaching the semi-finals of the tournament today after beating Juan Pablo Varillas by 6-4, 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Thiem returned from a wrist injury that put him on the sidelines for 10 months in the Mallorca Open last year, the Austrian has finally found his rhythm once again after winning matches consecutively in the Swiss Open, he beat Hugo Gaston in the Round of 32, Federico Delbonis in the round of 16 and Varillas in the quarter-finals and booked his ticket in the semi-finals of the tournament.

Dominic Thiem reached his first ATP-level semi-final of this season after beating Varillas in the quarter-finals of the Swiss Open, the Austrian progressed to the semi-finals after 1 hour and 47 minutes, where he dominated his Peruvian opponent and won in two straight sets. Thiem recorded his first quarter-final win in 14 months.
Thiem expressed his happiness after the win, he said, “I played a good match yesterday and I was able to back it up today, some things I didn’t like that much. I failed to serve out at [5-2], but it was also the nerves a little bit because it is my first semi-final in one and a half years. I need the points to go back up the rankings. I was happy I was able to break the nerves.”
“Tomorrow I can go into the match free, trying to do my best, when I traveled to Bastad last week I didn’t expect to reach the quarter-finals there and then the semi-finals here. It is really, really good and I am happy with the progress.” Thiem added further while talking to the ATP in his post-match interview.
