“Hard to adjust in the beginning” Iga Swiatek overcomes an inspired Danka Kovinic to record a 31st consecutive match win at the French Open

Danka Kovinic, Iga Swiatek
Iga Swiatek the world number 1, beat Danka Kovinic 6-3, 7-5 in the third round of the French Open 2022. She beat the Montenegrin in straight sets. Kovinic was the only the second player in the last nine matches to have responded to Iga by pushing her into the tiebreak for the set. With this match victory, Iga Swiatek has made it to a 31-match win streak.
She is looking more and more formidable with every win and doesn’t show the slightest pressure of continuing this streak. Though she was tested by Kovinic today, who went from 4-1 down in the second to 4-5. This valiant effort by Kovinic not only showed her quality but also highlighted that Swiatek is able to tackle the pressure nicely.
“Need to be more consistent” Iga Swiatek looks for more improvement.

Swiatek will meet the winner of Alize Cornet vs Qinwen Zheng. Both Cornet and Zheng are in tremendous form and they would try to put resistance to an invincible looking Iga Swiatek. It was a tough match for Iga but she came through nicely to get past a dangerous Kovinic in straight sets.
On the on-court interview with Mats Wilander, about the match, she said:
“I wanted to play aggressively but sometimes I felt like I was putting too much power because her balls were also powerful and it was pretty hard to control when I was playing full speed, so I needed to play with a little less risk and just try to be more consistent during the rallies”
On Wilander’s question of how tough was it to deal with Kovinic’s big serves, she said:
“Sure, she was serving very precisely and at times it was tricky to see where she was gonna serve, but I have played with some heavy hitters already, so I feel like it’s fine with me. It was just hard to adjust in the beginning as in the previous rounds, I was playing the opponents whose serves were a little bit slower”
Swiatek would be happy to get a tough match as she would try to put her mental strength to the test as well for the title at the Roland-Garros. For today, she plans to rest while she enjoys football and get back to the grind tomorrow.
