Nick Kyrgios‘s quest for another great finish at another Grand Slam tournament got a full stop when he was defeated by Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals of the 2022 US Open losing in a thrilling 5-set match. Kyrgios had defeated the world number one Daniil Medvedev in four sets to make his place into the final eight for the first time at US Open.

He was looked upon as one of the favorites at the US Open after having a great season at the hard-court tournaments that lead to the US Open, especially after his win at the Citi Open in the singles as well in the doubles category with partner Jack Sock. He had also made his place in the quarter-finals at the Canadian Open where he lost to Hubert Hurkacz but had a disappointing exit at the Cincinnati Open.

Kyrgios is currently one of the flag bearers of tennis in Australia and has been very consistent with his performances since his stint in Wimbledon as he reached his first ever singles Grand Slam final after receiving a walkover because of Rafael Nadal‘s withdrawal due to injury.

“I think he’s frustrated!” John McEnroe on Nick Kyrgios’ antics after the quarter-final defeat

Kyrgios after his loss to Khachanov at the US Open looked frustrated and after the customary hand-shake bashed his racquet in his hand with full force and further picked another racquet to again smash it and let out his frustration. John McEnroe, the former American player with 7 singles Grand Slam titles, criticized Krgios’s antics stating that it went ‘too far ‘ by smashing his racquets on the court while Khachanov was celebrating his victory.

McEnroe said “That was after the match so it was a little unbecoming because I get he’s frustrated but this is when Karen Khachanov was thanking the people on his side. So that was going too far – I know something about that. Nick obviously does that almost every match. We saw the full Nick there. To me, I’ve always said it’s better to go out and try and fail than to not try at all. So he’s finally gotten there. We need to encourage him to keep going and battling.”

He further added “He’s paid his dues the last three to six months, he’s played a lot more tournaments. I wouldn’t poo the other tournaments completely, because that sets you up ranking-wise so he would get easier draws potentially – that’s important. But obviously, he’s right that people are going to remember how you do in the Slams.

Kyrgios is quite famous for displaying his emotional outbreaks on the court and this was nothing new for him as he has been frequently doing something or the other in his matches. Similarly, during the Wimbledon finals, he resorted to arguments with the chair umpires and even urged the chair umpire to oust a spectator who had been troubling him during the much-crucial match.
