“He bageled me”- Sebastian Korda reveals he has never defeated father Petr Korda
Sebastian Korda, Petr Korda
Sebastian Korda has shown glimpses of his brilliance on tour this season. After reaching the third round at the Australian Open, the American has had a major spell of inconsistent performances. He reached the quarterfinals of the Delray Beach Open but then got knocked out of the Mexican Open in the opening round. He showed a great fight against Rafael Nadal at the Indian Wells, proving his talent but eventually lost the match in three sets. He had a decent Miami Open too as he was beaten by Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round. He is currently preparing on clay for the upcoming Roland Garros.
Sebastian Korda‘s passion for the sport came from his father Petr Korda who was a great tennis star. Petr Korda won the Australian Open in 1998 and also reached the finals of the French Open in 1992. He also won the Australian Open in Doubles back in 1996 and reached the finals of the French Open in Doubles aswell as he paired up with Goran Ivanisevic in 1990.
So after his first win at the Estoril Open against France’s Pierre-Hughes Herbert, Korda was asked during the on-court interview regarding his father, Petr Korda and when did he beat him. The American came up with a very light hearted answer, as he replied, “No, I have never beaten my dad (Petr Korda). The last time I played against him, he beat me 6-0 when I was like 12 years old.”
Sebastian Korda has had a very inconsistent season on tour
Korda has carried this inconsistent form into the clay season but he started off really well in Monaco and eventually got beaten in the round of 16. Korda defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the opening round but was beaten in straight sets by compatriot Taylor Fritz. However, he failed to maintain his form as he lost out in the opening round at the Barcelona Open as local player Carlos Taberner came up with a second set bagel.
Currently plying his trade at the Estoril Open, Korda who is the eighth seed has beaten Pierre-Huges Herbert in the first round 6-2,6-4 in the first round and will now play against France’s Benjamin Bonzi. The Frenchman has defeated French Open finalist Dominic Thiem in the first round. Therefore Korda cannot take him lightly.
