“Why not ask Rafa, Roger or the council?”- Paul Macnamee thrashes comments against Novak Djokovic’s Wimbledon stance

Former doubles No. 1 Paul McNamee has praised Novak Djokovic for his support of the ATP’s decision to strip Wimbledon of its ranking points this year. He has also bashed another tennis star, Mark Petchey, for his criticism of the Serb.

After the British Major prohibited Russian and Belarusian players from competing owing to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the ATP and WTA made their choices. Since winning the competition last year after defeating Matteo Berrettini in the final, the World No. 1 stands to lose the most ranking points. McNamee praised Djokovic’s “incredibly unselfish” stance on Twitter while also criticising Mark Petchey. “Incredibly unselfish by Djokovic, given he is the one who had the most to lose … I think it’s time he started getting credit for his integrity,” McNamee wrote.

Later, in another tweet, he also replied to Mark Petchey, who was openly criticising the Serb. Petchey expressed via Twitter, “So have I got this correct 99% of the players want points  @Wimbledon according to Benoit but Novak as the leading voice in the PTPA doesn’t? Am I missing something here that would appear to be the purest definition of cognitive dissonance seen in tennis yet?”

To stage a strong reply to Petchey, the doubles specialist replied via his Twitter by writing, “Seriously? You’re picking on the guy who had the most to lose, who would be accused of self-interest, and who is being noble…why not ask the guys who actually made the decision, being Rafa, Roger and the Player Council…perhaps Petch?”

The ATP and WTA have revealed a major decision. After the tournament banned Russian and Belarusian players from competing this year, the two bodies decided to deduct ranking points from Wimbledon. Djokovic has been dealt a severe setback as a result of this decision. Following the decision to deduct ranking points from the tournament, 2021 Wimbledon points will deduct as usual at the end of this year’s championships, resulting in Novak Djokovic losing 2,000 points and his number one position.

Djokovic won his 20th grand slam championship by defeating Matteo Berrettini in the Wimbledon finals last year. He is the defending Wimbledon champion this year and was expected to protect his 2000 ranking points from the previous year. However, because ranking points are no longer available for this year’s Wimbledon Championships, the Serb will forfeit them and hence lose his No. 1 ranking.
