“He has been controversial” Stefanos Tsitsipas steamrolls Jordan Thompson to set up a third round clash against ‘high flying’ Nick Kyrgios
Stefanos Tsitsipas, Nick Kyrgios
Stefanos Tsitsipas has continued his momentum from his first grass-court title in Mallorca the previous week. He won the first round of Wimbledon 2022 in four sets against Alexander Ritschard but improved against the Australian Jordan Thompson to defeat him 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 in the second round of the Championships. Tsitsipas was very dominant today, winning the first set in 31 minutes and with his flow today it seemed impossible for the match to last longer than three sets.
Tsitsipas after his title victory in Mallorca last week had said that he loves grass and it was a surprise to him why people didn’t expect him to do well on it because he always believed that he was good on grass. He said that it might even be a more favorite surface for him than clay, where he usually performed the best. With first-round exits in the previous two Wimbledon, Tsitsipas has arrived to set his grass records straight this Wimbledon as he moves into the third round. He faces a very dangerous and in-form Nick Kyrgios in the third round of the Championships.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is happy with his level on the grass at Wimbledon 2022.
During the on-court interview, Stefanos expressed his happiness with his game. He said: “I have to say, it was a great match today. I’m really happy I got the crowd involved by my side. I’m not a Brit, but I really felt the love of crowd by my side and that pushed me to do it. It has been challenging, last year it was a completely different story than it is this year, as you said my movement was, I wasn’t really that involved behind the ball last year. So, It’s great to see that evolution happened within a year, I’m feeling like home playing on grass. I feel like it really suits my game perfectly. I’m happy when I see myself play that level of tennis like today. As long as everything works I’m happy to keep putting the commitment and see where it leads me.”
About his third-round match with Nick Kyrgios, Stefanos said: “I feel like there isn’t a single person that doesn’t know Nick. We have played each other, we had a great matches against one other in many tour-level competitions. I have respect for his game, the way he is able to utilize his talents, and the ways he fights when he really wants to. It’s going to be challenging one on grass, and he is a big opponent for the surface.” “I’m thrilled to be facing him. I definitely respect him on the court, what he is trying to do even though he has been a little bit controversial. I’m going to concentrate on doing my thing and paying attention to my game from start to finish.”
