“He hasn’t developed aggressively,” Mats Wilander criticizes Daniil Medvedev’s game; calls him “unorthodox”

Daniil Medvedev & Mats Wilander

Daniil Medvedev, who hasn’t been the talk of the day for some time now thanks to Mats Wilander has changed and provides the tennis community with insight as the Swede closely monitors and investigates the crux of his game which fell through the cracks amidst his defeat to Rafael Nadal.

The authenticity of The Big Three in their GOAT race in the meantime is flushed down the drain as recently Novak Djokovic’s ban from the US Open 2022 led him to withdraw his name from this championship due to his stance on the Covid-19 vaccination which earlier had taken a toll on him back in Australian Open. Meanwhile, Roger Federer, who has been absent from professional tennis for a while now has no standing in the upcoming US Open, leaving just Rafael Nadal of the three.

The Russian, who currently enjoys the pleasure of sitting at world No. 1 according to Wilander “fell back into his flaws” and was earlier a difficult target as the Swede quoted “Because it is very difficult to play against him. He is so unorthodox.” Further pointing out his gameplay, Wilander stated “I feel like he hasn’t developed aggressively.”

“He is so unorthodox in the way he hits the ball, moves, swings his racquet, stands in court, and serves. I mean, we’ve never seen someone like Medvedev before,” quoted Mats Wilander as he further deliberated on the Russian’s game. The world on many occasions has witnessed Medvedev’s on-court tactics to which Wilander went on record saying “And I think players don’t know how to play against him, or at least didn’t know how to play against him. And I think the development of this style of tennis has been held back, especially in the final in Melbourne.”

Whilst also pulverizing what his game-play can be moving forward the Swede quoted “I think he’s figured it out because he’s going back to playing a bit like before, and the players are going to figure it out because it’s not that complicated.” Mats, who is also a former world No. 1 tennis professional during his exemplary career won seven Grand Slam titles.

As far as Daniil Medvedev goes, the 26-year-old has been seen practicing rigorously for his upcoming performance at the US Open with the hopes of adding the championship to his career winnings but it won’t be easy considering one of tennis’s biggest forbiddable players Rafael Nadal will be joining in the Grand Slam run as well.
