“He is authentic and I respect that” Novak Djokovic thanks Nick Kyrgios for support during the difficult time in Australia
Nick Kyrgios, Novak Djokovic
The third-round encounter between Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas was a fiery encounter both due to the quality of the match as well as the extremely wild and loud atmosphere. Nick Kyrgios lost the first set and resorted to his usual dramatics of unloading on umpires, line judges, and mumbling between the points. But Stefanos Tsitsipas lost the second set and let Nick get under his skin and finally lost the match.
Tsitsipas also suffered a meltdown during the match as he smacked the ball in the crowd, which fortunately didn’t anyone directly so he escaped from being defaulted. There was a lot of debate about the behavior of the two players during the match and a lot of blame was poured over Kyrgios about how he brought shame to the sport and dragged down Tsitsipas to his level.
Novak Djokovic believes Nick Kyrgios does a great job of attracting attention to tennis.
Novak Djokovic also talked about the incident. He said: “Kyrgios is often seen with such situations on the court. It’s always fun, and on the other hand – maybe not so much for his opponent. The fact is, it’s him and whether anyone likes it or not, it brings a lot of attention to tennis. I see that it’s good that he attracts a group of young people who follow him, love him, and like that he’s different and that’s how he plays – and I don’t think that’s bad for our sport.”
“Maybe in some situations his comments on and off the field are debatable, but it’s an authentic Kyrgios – and I respect that. Even though he said bad things about me for years, he stood by me again in Australia – and when it was hardest for me, he was one of the few people who spoke in public on my behalf and supported me – and I am grateful to him for that,” he added.
